Biography

Joyce Davies was born in 1960 in Glasgow and has lived remotely on the Shetland Isles for the past 15 years. She was a trained nurse, gaining a Masters in Psychology and a Post Graduate Masters in Clinical Psychology. After a traumatic period in her life, she married, had three children and returned to work as Head of Child Psychology for six years. Davies then became very ill, and following some tough years, started to explore crafts, leading to an art practice. Until then she had not been creative, but had enjoyed looking at stained glass windows, portraiture and geometric art. Until recently, she attended an arts studio on the Shetland Isles where she learnt her printing practice.

Davies lives with a complex physical, psychological and neurological illness. She says that her art helps her to live in the moment and helps to change how she experiences daily life. It allows her to be creative in outputting her feelings. After spending her career listening to others, she now listens to her inner voices and reflects on these through her art. Davies hopes that people enjoy looking at her art and that her story and artwork will help others in similar positions. She says it reflects who she is, both in the past, present and even glimpsing into the future.

Davies says, “For me Art is therapy. I think it found me. I know I needed it.”
