Full Biography

Robert Fischer, born 1976 in Gera, has worked in the Geyso20 art studio since 2004. In Geyso20 people with disabilities have the freedom to work independently to develop their own artistic language. Robert is a completely self-taught artist. Due to his disability he does not communicate with others about his works and this leaves the viewer, and the studio that support him, to make their own judgments on what he is drawing. He attends Geyso20 two days a week and, when working, he may spend weeks and sometimes months completing one piece of work.

Robert works in a combination of pencil, crayon and felt pen. It is said that he begins his drawings with a graphic framework that reminds audiences of houses, building plans or machines. They seem to depict memories of excursions in parks, museums or walks in the city. Robert then covers his artworks with lines, letters, and symbols, which again remind audiences of numbers. The mark making is wonderful to look at with many of the letters seeming backwards on the page. Several of his artworks change over the period he is working on them, with lots of the initial structures disappearing under opaque or heavy black layers. Bright colours and strong shapes appear in the final artworks.
